Chuck Sperry Solo Museum Exhibition at Fort Wayne Museum of Art in September

Chuck Sperry Fort Wayne Museum of Art

All Access: Exploring Humanism in the Art of Chuck Sperry

September 15 – December 9, 2018

The Fort Wayne Museum of Art is pleased to celebrate Chuck Sperry’s first solo museum exhibition. Sperry has been preeminent in the rock poster genre since the late 1990s and has largely defined the genre in each decade since with his distinctive style and masterful printing technique.

Sperry has drawn inspiration for this work from the classical Greco-Roman idea of the muses, and their metaphorical home on Mount Helikon — the source of inspiration for all things art and music. Naiads, nymphs and muses in their richly patterned floral settings make their way into Sperry’s work. Dripping with brightly colored flowers, decked in gold and silver textures, Sperry’s blue-silver muses sing a paean to the long tradition of humanism reactivated in the struggle for social progress, universal human rights, a more perfect democracy and the utopian ideals of the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco where Sperry has made his home since 1989.

Symbolism, Secession, ukiyo-e, and psychedelia blend in Sperry’s flattened, post-modern figurative art: all potent ingredients Sperry strives self-consciously to re-evaluate for the 21st Century.

The exhibit will feature 2 large scale tapestries designed by Sperry, 25 screen prints on oak panel, original ink drawings, and ephemeral color progressives which illuminate Sperry’s unique printing process.

There will be several new wood panel editions, and two new paper editions with variant editions available to acquire.

I will be releasing “Chthoneon, The Art of Chuck Sperry” the 136 page follow up of my art book “Helikon, The Muses of Chuck Sperry”.

This exhibition is organized by the Fort Wayne Museum of Art and its Curator of Contemporary Art Josef Zimmerman.

Widespread Panic Red Rocks 2018

Widespread Panic Red Rocks by Chuck Sperry

16 x 35
Edition of 650
5 colors on cream paper
Signed and Numbered

I will be making a very limited release of the Artist Edition and variants of my Widespread Panic Red Rocks poster on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at a random time.

_

Widespread Panic Summer Solstice weekend at Red Rocks, three days of incredible music under the stars.

Look up! Let me show you my favorite constellation, the Corona Borealis, the crown of stars, the god of wine and song Dionysus set high in the heavens to express his immortal love for the kind beauty Ariadne.

In some tellings of her story, the shining crown was made by the fiery blacksmith Hephaestus — the ever hardworking artist — and given to Ariadne by Venus because she favored her grace and gentle spirit.

Ariadne lent the bright crown of stars and a fine unbreakable thread to clever Theseus to help him escape the labyrinth after slaying the Minotaur and saving the children of Athens — poor imperfect democracy — from the evil beast.

Lot’s of reasons to love the starry Corona Borealis, but mostly because it crowns Widespread Panic for three beautiful nights of friends, family, and the music at Red Rocks. Enjoy!

From The Archive: Psychedelic Secession 2010 Poster – On Sale!

To celebrate the massive success of my skateboard design with Nick Cave (Read More), I’m opening my archive to release the print version (from 2010) of my Nick Cave skateboard design (April 2018).

In 2010 I made a well-documented European rock art tour for two months, visiting Italy, France, Switzerland and the UK. Read More

My original tour statement: “The Europe 2010 Tour is called “Psychedelic Secession,” and is aimed at connecting to poster movements of the Decadent Period and Belle Epoque in Europe, folding that connection into the Psychedelic Period of San Francisco in the 1960’s, and moving ahead at the forefront of the present modern global silkscreen poster movement.”

In a rare opportunity, this Sperry classic from 2010 will be made available from my archive reserve.

I will be making this very limited online release (right here in this post) on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at a random time.

Sperry at “Mermay” Art Show at Modern Eden Gallery

Siren by Chuck Sperry for Modern Eden Mermay
Siren, 2018
17.5 x 33
Oak Panel Edition of 30
7 colors on oak panel
Signed and Numbered

Originally produced in 2015 as a screenprint on paper for the ocean environmental activist foundation Pangea Seed, my latest print on oak panel, “Siren”, is meant as warning. My imagination has always been drawn to this mythical being – dangerous and enchanting – whose form is an enthralling warning. The Siren dances and sings like the sea itself, seducing us with her sound, movement and beauty.

Long ago, on November 5, 1965, prominent climate scientists Roger Revelle, Wallace Broecker, Charles Keeling, Harmon Craig, and J Smagorisnky met with US President Lyndon Johnson and warned him of their findings on Climate Change. By 1974, Wallace Broekner had modeled his prediction for the affects of accumulated carbon dioxide on the global surface temperature of the Earth.

His predictions remain accurate to this day.

I am alarmed by the state of our planet’s environment. I grew up with the warnings. The predicted changes are here now.

It’s clearly time to act. Please be mindful and give your care to the environment. It’s time to do what you can to become a good steward of the environment.

World Press: Nick Cave Releases Insanely Cool New Grinderman Inspired Skateboard Designed by Chuck Sperry

Nick Cave Skateboard by Chuck Sperry

by James Rettig, April 17, 2018 • Billboard

Back in 2015, Nick Cave teamed up with the Australian skate company Fast Times to make an official Nick Cave skateboard, with an illustration from San Francisco artist Chuck Sperry.

That same trio of collaborators has teamed up yet again for another board. This one’s inspired by “Heathen Child,” a song from Cave’s side project Grinderman. A banner on the top of the board features some lyrics from that track: “Hey little Moo Moo, light as a rainbow.”

The board comes in street and cruiser deck styles, and there’s also a t-shirt to go along with it — you can now order any of those world-wide from Fast Times Skateboarding here.

This is one of many insanely cool projects I’ve collaborated with Nick Cave on. In addition to a number of beautiful rock posters I’ve made for Mr. Cave, Nick was kind enough to contribute his lyrics from “The Lyre of Orpheus” from “Abbatoir Blues” to my collection of art and poetry, “Helikon, The Muses of Chuck Sperry” :
