The Pogues at The Warfield and The Regency, San Francisco, October 13 and 14, 2009

poguessm

Here’s the first Firehouse Goldenvoice Series poster for both venues, The Warfield and The Regency, in San Francisco, number 70 in the series.

ANUFROG

Somehow I managed to draw and design and hand-letter this poster on the Monday after The TRPS Hall of Flowers Show. After having breakfast in The Haight-Ashbury with Urlo, Poia and Lu of Malleus, Jeff Wood, Johnny Thief and George Gamboa at The Pork Store. And after Jeff came over to the house to pack his posters to send home (Cool, Jeff stoked me a Stanley Mouse / Jeff Wood – Sheppard Fairey parody – colab print called “DOSE”). And after a gallery meeting with Phil Cushway at Artrock. And after dropping The Malleus kids off at Union Square; I got to work on this drawing of Anu – Irish Goddess of The Waters. The first real winter rain was just starting to blow into San Francisco, tearing through the trees in front of my apartment in the Panhandle. Thought the Pogues would dig this drawing, a reference to the primordial Celtic goddess of fertility.

POGUES

Urlo arrived and suggested I put “The Pogues” into the reflection right under Anu’s face. I handed him the drawing and a piece of paper and pencil and asked him if he would like to letter that. So he did. The result is a bit of a cool colab action – all relaxed – just a slice of life. Nice to have the Malleus folks staying at the house.

ACID KING added to Varnish Show!

Dark-Nouveau-varnish

I’m stoked to announce that Acid King is going to play with Ufomammut at the Dark Nouveau art show at Varnish Fine Art on Saturday, October 24, 2009. Details of the show and advance ticket sales information here.

–

Dave Hunter made this sweet poster at Hangar 18 for the event (above).

–

Cool thing for me about Acid King playing this show – is that the very first poster Ron Donovan and I collaborated on was for Acid King and Fear at the Trocadero. So it’s all in the family.

–

Check Ron and my Acid King poster below. And in case you are wondering – this poster is waaaay sold out – so don’t ask.

Motorhead, Reverend Horton Heat and Nashville Pussy at the Warfield Poster

motorhead

How’s this for a Rock Moment? I leave George Gamboa and Doug Dashiell to go to the Warfield lobby and get a beer as Nashville Pussy wraps their set. In the lobby I run into Goldenvoice head honcho David Lefkowitz who says, “Chuck! Great poster for tonight!” and Eric McFadden appears and I say, “Hey Dude! You rocked the shit out of ‘Low Spark of High Heeled Boys’ with Gov’t Mule last week! Ron and I have to have a recording of that. It’s one of the Firehouse’s favorite songs. Amazing!” Right then Nashville Pussy’s guitarist, Ruyter Suys comes busting through the door on the shoulders of the biggest friggin bouncer at the Warfield, says. “Hey! Eric!” and deposits herself right into Eric McFadden’s arms right in the middle of this convo. Amazing show!

Slice of life and great night! Idea for the poster is something like this: Knights Templar, Knight of Rock’n’roll, or just plain Metal. You decide.

Malleus – Forbes – Firehouse at Artrock Gallery – 7 pm – October 10

DARK NOUVEAU

Malleus, Alan Forbes and Firehouse

Artrock Gallery

893 Folsom Street in San Francisco

MALLEUS, the artist collective of Urlo, Poia and Lu, the remarkable poster design team from Italy, will be unveiling their new works and limited art prints on Saturday, October 10 at ARTROCK GALLERY in San Francisco.

Alan Forbes and Chuck Sperry / Ron Donovan of the Firehouse will exhibit with MALLEUS – each presenting art prints specifically designed for the event.

In addition there will be a live print demonstration, so you will have an opportunity to acquire an exclusive art print made for you right before your very eyes.

The event is a celebration of DARK NOUVEAU, a return to the roots of poster creation.

DARK NOUVEAU evokes equally the fin de siécle style of Toulouse-Lautrec and 1960’s San Francisco Psychedelia – and operates here as a manifesto of reinvention and revision – aimed at connecting to the poster movement of the Decadent Period to the Belle Epoque and folding it into the Psychedelic Period to the present modern global silkscreen movement.

DARK NOUVEAU opens at 7pm – Saturday, October 10 at ARTROCK GALLERY – 893 Folsom Street in San Francisco.

“Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder.”
