PangeaSeed Foundation and artist Chuck Sperry are pleased to announce – a fine art print to help save our seas. This limited edition will be released Thursday, February 7, 2019 at 12pm PST via shop.PangeaSeed.org – limit one print per household.
_______________

My print for PangeaSeed Foundation, “The Diver”, is a celebration of the beauty of the ocean environment and our inter-connected place in it.We are oxygen breathing animals, and we live on land. “The Diver” is leaving her natural habitat to enter a watery world, where she can not survive long for lack of air; there she is surrounded by the beauty and danger of the seas. She is also surrounded by the essence of her life on land.

“The Diver” plunges into the beautiful ocean surrounded by myriad air bubbles. Our ocean environment plays a crucial role in the generation of the majority of Earth’s life-sustaining air. We could not live on land and breathe fresh air without the world’s oceans. 70% of Earth’s oxygen comes from marine plants in our ocean environments. Heat driven loss of ocean oxygen is one of the leading threats to the delicate world biome posed by Climate Change.

It’s clearly time to act. Please be mindful and give your care to the environment. It’s time to do what you can to become a good steward of the environment. I am always happy to contribute my time and energy to PangeaSeed Foundation! Their efforts in helping to save the oceans, thru art and activism, deserve our support and good energies!

I noted in the credit line of my poster: “After Alfred Roller.” The figure of the diver in my print is influenced by a figure in the work of Vienna Secessionist artist Alfred Roller, the brilliant early 20th Century graphic stylist and inventor of the free, flowing typographical fonts that inspired artist Wes Wilson to create psychedelic lettering in the 1960’s.

As the night of Tuesday 8 November 2016 dragged into the early hours of Wednesday morning, people around the globe were readjusting their expectations for what the world would look like over the following four years. The 45th president of the United States would not be Hillary Rodham Clinton, as had been widely predicted, but Donald J Trump. The day after he was inaugurated, hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Washington as part of the Women’s March; worldwide, millions attended hundreds of related marches. Since then, Trump’s presidency has been marked by protests.

“It all started with the election – we were like, ‘We need to do something,’” says Jennifer Lippert, editorial director at Princeton Architectural Press in New York. She spotted a blog post showing a sign in a window that said “Everyone Welcome Here” and this sparked an idea: PAP would put out a call for political posters and publish the best as a book, donating the proceeds to non-profit organizations.

“We didn’t want curse words in it, and we didn’t want it to be about Trump – we wanted it to be about the issues,” says Lippert. They received 800 submissions from around the world, covering topics such as climate change, civil rights, LGBTQ issues, healthcare, feminism and gun control. “In the last couple of years there’s been so much happening with protests. Since the election we’ve definitely seen more people engaged in the political environment,” says Lippert.

The 50 posters in the book were chosen on the strength of their graphic design, the clarity of their message and their ability to grab people’s attention. They are also detachable: “The whole point of the book was that they would be hung up – in windows, in shops, in dorm rooms, on front doors, in offices…”

Graphic design activism has a rich history, and when putting the book together, Lippert’s editorial team did extensive research into protest art going back to the 1960s. It found that although there is now much more computer-generated art, other techniques have remained the same – hand-drawn posters and collages are still among the most popular. And while there is now more focus on LGBTQ rights, many of the issues being discussed 50 years ago are still relevant – the environment, peace, equal rights. “It’s hard to think about things not getting better. But I feel like there are so many issues we still have to overcome that we’ve always had to overcome. The biggest, I think, is equality for everybody.”

Lippert remains hopeful: the recent rise in activism, she believes, is a promising sign for the future. “I think when you start taking things away from people – their right to speak out, equality – it sparks a change. People realise that they do have a voice and they need to use it, otherwise change will never happen. I think that’s what we’re seeing now.”

Posters for Change – Tear, Paste, Protest: 50 Removable Posters is published by Princeton Architectural Press on 20 March

PangeaSeed and artist Chuck Sperry are pleased to announce the eleventh official print release of our 2015 print suite “Tales from the Deep: Stories, Myths & Monsters” – a fine art print suite to help save our seas. This limited edition will be released Thursday, November 12 at 12pm PST via shop.PangeaSeed.org – limit one print per household.
_______________
My print for Pangea Seed, “Siren”, is meant as warning. My imagination has always been drawn to this mythical being – dangerous and enchanting – whose form is an enthralling warning. The Siren dances and sings like the sea itself, seducing us with her sound, movement and beauty.

Long ago, on November 5, 1965, prominent climate scientists Roger Revelle, Wallace Broecker, Charles Keeling, Harmon Craig, and J Smagorisnky met with US President Lyndon Johnson and warned him of their findings on Climate Change. By 1974, Wallace Broekner had modeled his prediction for the affects of accumulated carbon dioxide on the global surface temperature of the Earth. His predictions remain accurate to this day.

As of 2015 we have experienced a 1 degree centigrade rise in temperature worldwide, as Broekner predicted.

In the last few seasons we have witnessed the California Drought, a record fire season, and the Pacific Blob (a 2-7 degree rise in Pacific Coastal water temperatures).

I am alarmed by the state of our planet’s environment. I grew up with the warnings. The predicted changes are here now.

It’s clearly time to act. Please be mindful and give your care to the environment. It’s time to do what you can to become a good steward of the environment. I am always happy to contribute my time and energy to Pangea Seed! Their efforts in helping to save the seas deserve our support and good energies!

Artist Statement:
I chose to bring attention to the Estuary Environment in my print depicting the sea-dwelling, nature spirit “Oceanid” for Pangea Seed. I live in San Francisco and I am part of the Estuary Environment of the Bay Area. Estuary dwellers, whether they be marine mammal, fish or fowl – or human being – are my kind of people! Many weekends me and my girlfriend can be found roving the Northern California Coast with binoculars, spotting harbor seals and sea lions.

My dawning realization that we are all interconnected by the fragility of the environment has found me upgrading my printing methods for a low environmental impact with my new wash-out sink filtration system and ink clean-up disposal and recycling. Making these changes took some effort, some expense, and are by no means perfect, but I’m doing my best. I am blessed to share my little sunny spot in nature with incredible beings, and I feel incredibly honored to be part of Pangea Seed’s efforts to protect our precious ocean environment.
