I made this classic punk rock design for my friends in the band Sex Crime who will be touring Europe this October and November. Funny story, last August, I was delivering the large scale silkscreens from my Italian church installation to my friend’s restaurant Blue Valentine in Paris. When I arrived, we celebrated my arrival by going to a tiki bar for drinks. I was in Paris for one night only. One night, and I ran into my old gang!

Cecilia, who was in the classic punk band Les Terribles, appeared at the bar right next to me to order a drink. A few years ago Cecilia, a French girl, married Ryan from The Epoxies, and moved to Portland. So when I saw Cecilia out of the blue, I said, “Hey, what are you doing in Paris?” She laughed, returned, “What are you doing here?” (It was my friend Ywan’s birthday and everyone was downstairs in the VIP room. Ywan owns Born Bad, the coolest record store in Paris, where I had one of my first big shows in Paris about 8 years ago, and there he was with a bunch of our friends!)

When I was up in Portland for my retrospective, I looked up Cecilia and Ryan, and we hung out all week. It was very nice getting back in touch! Well, Ryan and Cecilia asked me to make a tour poster for their great new band, Sex Crime.

When I was back in Paris at the end of August I asked my friends Alex, Silvio and Pierre of Editions Penibles to print the tour edition of Sex Crime. That saved Ryan and Cecilia a bundle in duties. You may remember Alex from Editions Penibles who helped me print my PRIMUS poster from a couple years back. Same crew. Alex from Editions Penibles was my apprentice in Italy when I made the print studio there for a year in 2007, so we go way back. Editions Penibles are mad good printers, and they are very tight with all the best graffiti writers in Paris, so have a look at some of their posters HERE and “like” their Facebook page HERE.

There will be a Tour Edition of the Sex Crime poster – not signed – and an Artist Edition of the Sex Crime poster – signed and numbered – which I am offering here.

Last August Alex took me into the UN-official catacombs of Paris. I am not talking about the tourist catacombs. We entered this endless network by hopping a fence and scrambling through a hole in the broken masonry in an old abandoned metro tunnel. We went exploring, wandered through miles of secret passages up to our knees in fresh ground water (you are about 100 feet below the sewer system). We found all sorts of cool graf, and found inscriptions from before and during the French Revolution (You can tell the Revolutionary ones, for instance the one in the photo below says, “7R,” meaning the Seventh Year of the French Revolution). Alex took me below the Montparnasse Cemetery where we discovered heaps of 400 year old bones. It was the definition of spooky! What an adventure! Here’s some photos of my catacomb experience:

Back in the saddle, and happy to be back printing and feeling in top form with my newest Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros poster. ESMZ played the America’s Cup Pavilion in San Francisco tonight and it was a beautiful night under the moonlight, with Coit Tower shining down on everyone from the top of Telegraph Hill. The band was in good form tonight, and getting ready for their huge new pet project – “Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros – Big Top” which is coming up on October 17 through 20. My ESMZ poster is inspired by Amphitrite, ancient goddess of the sea, a sailor’s goddess, paying homage to the America’s Cup and the concert setting right on The Bay at Pier 29. I realized my Edward Sharpe poster with 7 painterly layers of ink, intricate textures, and waves of heavy metallic silver and thick gold foam, suggestive of the sea but also implying waves of music washing across the listener. I worked very intensively for two consecutive print sessions to complete this one; I’m very, very happy with the resulting print! This one sold out before Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros took the stage.

I just got back from hand delivering the posters for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros’ homecoming show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. The beauty of hand delivery, is that I got to see the show. I took visiting Argentine artist Alan Berry Rhys and his girlfriend Emilia Carranza with me to the show. We had a blast and what an excellent show!

ESMZ

Sun Ra Arkestra opened and also came out on stage with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros for an amazing encore with no less than 25 people on stage (at least). I created my poster with an intricate and elegant arrangement of flowers, printing a very heavy metallic silver on black linen paper, and delicately tinting the silver with translucent colors. The details are very fine and the registration was exceptionally difficult, but the result made me very happy! I wanted to express the ensemble nature of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (and Sun Ra Arkestra – for that matter) where there is no compositional center but all the intricate parts naturally combine to make art that is beautiful – like a bouquet of luminous flowers. It’s an expression of the idea of participatory democracy, a political notion and a musical theory, evident in the musical structure of Edward Sharpe and the Magentic Zeros and Sun Ra Arkestra. But then again, it’s only rock and roll and I like it!

________________

I returned from Italy in early July, and have been busy preparing for the next round of events planned for the end of the summer and fall. So there has been a lot going on, but most of it behind the scenes this July. Excuse my silence, but you’ll be getting all the news this week! I’ll be making a lot of posts this week to catch everyone up with the fantastic success of the Italian tour, my solo show at Mondo Bizzarro in Rome, and my site-specific installation in the Oratorio di Santa Maria in Selaa in Tellaro, Liguria. I can’t wait to show you film and photos of this fantastic tour!

Also, I built an enormous new custom designed exposure unit specifically to create the large-scale art pieces which I showed in Europe, and I want to tell you about that. So expect a post about this incredible new addition to my studio this week too.

Also, I’m really excited to tell you in a post later this week, that the 10 large-scale wood panel pieces I showed in the church in Tellaro, are being permanently installed in an excellent restaurant in Paris which will be themed around my art, and planned to open in September.

So stay tuned! More posters will be coming your way in the next weeks! And lots of exciting news! And I have a lot of new exhibitions to announce — at my own Hangar 18 Studio Gallery on August 9, in Portland at The Peoples Art on August 17, and in Argentina at the Art Fair of Buenos Aires in September!
