MGMT at Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium

What better way to start a tour called Psychedelic Secession but to go to the heart of the Psychedelic movement today, and bust out a killer poster for MGMT. These guys make some amazing music – this poster was drawn while listening to “Metanoia.”

“Small Change” by Truffaut at The Red Vic Movie House

smallchange_chucksperry

“Small Change” by François Truffaut is playing at The Red Vic Movie House on February 28 and March 1, 2010. I designed and printed this 5 color movie poster with heavy gold and several layers of light tints – a portrait of the director Truffaut – a tip-of-the-hat to Truffaut and the great films of the French New Wave.

“Small Change” is a light comedy concerning the daily lives of young children in Theirs, France. Truffaut is less interested in telling a three act story, instead focusing on the small events that make up childhood. The result is an almost completely improvised film study of an elusive subject matter: the beauty of being a child.

Here’s some pictures of the actual print. Instead of black – I used a brown ink (cafe au lait). First a heavy-duty gold metallic was laid down. The shadowing was done with two overlaying light varnishes of very translucent black (shadow in a can). One is photographed with gold reflection, one in natural non-reflective light. François Truffaut made an enormous impact on cinema and his films have an enduring popular appeal. Most significantly, he did a great deal to promote the idea of the director as an “auteur,” making him the inspiration for future generations of independent film-makers.

Truffaut had at least three great passions in his life: women, cinema and American pulp fiction. These passions were such a big part of his life that it is no surprise they should be so keenly reflected in his films.

Truffaut was also a great humanist, who supported many worthy causes for children, and this humanity is also an essential element of his films.

In 1976 Truffaut filmed “Small Change” (L’Argent de poche), a compelling study of young children.

MALLEUS IN SAN FRANCISCO

malleusFirehouse is organizing a series of shows for the Italian artists, Malleus, in San Francisco in October:

MALLEUS Rock Art Lab, the artist collective of Urlo, Poia and Lu, the sensational poster design team from Italy, will be attending The Rock Poster Society’s Hall of Flowers Festival of Posters this year.
This is their first visit to San Francisco, and it is their first tour of the United States.

They will be releasing their first book at the Hall of Flowers on October 11 entitled “The Blood of the Mountain Is The Hammer of God,” cataloging a decade of their uniquely beautiful poster and art designs. Many of their posters will be on display and available for sale. This will be a great opportunity for American collectors to view their amazing design and printing skills up close.

The Rock Poster Society is very proud to play host to Malleus; it’s a clear indication that The TRPS Hall of Flowers Festival of Posters has grown into an international event.

The Malleus collective very excited to come to San Francisco, which they refer to as the “Capitol of Rock Posters;” and Malleus’ growing number of fans here in the USA are excited to see their work and the artists live. Their brilliant posters from Italy, inspired equally by the fin de siècle style of Toulouse LaTrec and 1960’s San Francisco Psychedelia, indicate that the present rock poster movement, which started in San Francisco, is sweeping the world.

Malleus will also be appearing for an evening with Malleus at Artrock Gallery on October 10 at 7pm – 10pm, and at a book release party at the 540 Club located at 540 Clement Street, San Francisco on October 16th sponsored by Green Apple Books.
