Dazed and Confused Film Poster

DAZED-AND-CONFUSED-FINAL-WEB

Dazed and Confused, a film by Richard Linklater

20th Anniversary Screening and Cast Reunion

20 x 35

Edition of 240

9 colors on archival cream paper

Signed and Numbered

________________

Odd City Entertainment commissioned me to create a print for the Austin Film Society’s 20th Anniversary Screening and Cast Reunion of Richard Linklater’s iconic film, Dazed and Confused. My art print will be released at the Austin Film Society’s Dazed and Confused screening event on March 6, 2013 at The Marchesa Hall and Theatre in Austin, Texas. All net proceeds from the sale of my art print will benefit the Austin Film Society. Event attendees will receive priority when purchasing this print. In the unlikely case that there are additional prints which are reserved for the screening after the event, they will be sold through Odd City’s website.

About the artwork:

The H18 Project marks its debut with a special Chuck Sperry film poster for the 20th Anniversary Screening and Cast Reunion of Dazed and Confused, presented by the Austin Film Society.

To me, Dazed and Confused presents a pinball storyline structure and afforded me the opportunity to present the cast in equal weight to emphasize the ensemble nature of the film. They appear as bonus lights on the play table. I reproduced Mr. Linklater’s director notes to the actors on the pinball instruction card. The directions inspire the cast towards spontaneity, truthfulness, and in Linklater’s words “100% accuracy and thoroughness in detail” as I sincerely hope is also reflected in my poster  design.

More About the Dazed and Confused Film Poster by Chuck Sperry:

I was born in 1962 and was fourteen in 1976; I remember that year vividly. I was growing up in Ohio. If I’d grown up in Austin, Texas, I would have been Mitch in Dazed and Confused. In fact, Mitch is my referent within this well balanced ensemble cast in Richard Linklater’s outstanding paean to the era of my youth.

Like Mitch, I loved pinball, and the Fireball machine specifically, the popular arcade game upon which my Dazed and Confused poster is based. You can see it in the Emporium; Slater plays Fireball in the pinball scene. Pinball reflects the nuts and bolts affections of the analog spirit of ’76.

There’s a groovy, bicentennial pop quality to the mod design elements and use of gold and blue-silver metallic ink, and the use of nine colors to portray this icon to a bygone era immortalized in Mr. Linklater’s far out movie.

It’s January in San Francisco. The chill is starting to let go; the days get a little longer … and here comes the annual Edwardian Ball to entertain and amaze San Francisco’s creative nightlife, and jumpstart the year. This Edwardian dress-up party is clearly one of the very best events of it’s kind, and I’m very happy to make cool Edwardian Ball art for organizer Justin Katz every year. It’s always fun to try and top the preceding year’s effort – to do something really unusual and well-made, beautiful and over-the-top. This year, decked out for street attack aka “Squirt” I made this graffiti-style, billboard-sized wall piece for the event (measuring in at 8 feet by 5 feet), which is proudly hanging on the facade of the Regency Ballroom all weekend, facing San Francisco’s busiest thoroughfare, Van Ness. So you really can not get better placement, and sorry people, that’s a one of a kind. Here’s Edwardian Ball’s head-honcho, Justin Katz, digging my street piece right after installation:

I was honored to receive the commission from Spoke Art to create this limited edition art print in celebration of the 50th Anniversary Restoration Screening one of my all time favorite movies, “Lawrence of Arabia,” at San Francisco’s historic Castro Theatre. I really dug into this design and created custom Arabian patterns and intricate motifs to embellish the enigmatic, legendary personality of T.E. Lawrence as portrayed so intensely and memorably by Peter O’Toole in David Lean’s masterpiece of film art, “Lawrence of Arabia.”

I reflect the historical period of Lawrence with this poster, through the style associated with Moorish Revival which returned to fashion in the 1920’s and (lightly) through an Egyptian mode that influenced Art Deco. These stylistic currents were part of the lexicon of art, architecture and design that surrounded the beginnings of cinematic history. Not only were these exotic themes present in the posters of the period, they were also expressed in the architecture of the movie palaces constructed at the time (even in the Castro Theatre itself). So I felt that this treatment was not only relevant, it was necessary, and would harmonize with my exploration of poster history in my art.

As a short note of interest, I made my “Lawrence of Arabia” poster in an oversized dimension of 22 x 33 inches. My intention is to make a nice male counterpoint to the Widespread Panic Season’s series.
