BIG TOP FINAL WEB

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Big Top (Offset printed Program Poster)

20 x 30

___________

This past month, I’ve been working closely with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros to produce two very special posters for their amazing “Big Top” event at the Los Angeles State Historic Park this coming weekend, October 17, 18, 19, and 20. What a lovely crew of people!

As the project developed, I realized that there was a lot of cooperation going on. Strange, in this ego-fueled world of rock’n’roll. I started to notice, hmm, spectacular lack of ego politics with ESMZ. This Big Top, cool as hell circus event, with bands, performers, artists and even a farmers’ market, was being organized in a very open-ended way. Sure, there are big sponsors and production companies involved. It’s a professional concert. But as discussion evolved over the project, everyone started chiming in. And everyone in this crew was so respectful and endlessly supportive.

Working like this felt like the new way to organize society and social relationships, but saying that, I don’t want to make such a big deal out of it. Isn’t this how we should treat each other anyway: normally, decently, and with a patient capacity to listen?

While working on this project, there was a lot of discussion between me, band members, management, and event organizers. I’ve had experience with working in large groups to create art, and I have to admit it can easily turn into a “too many cooks” situation. That said, I’ll be damned, the creative environment around this group of people is unique, open and ridiculously easy. When you see ESMZ, this large band creating amazing music, sharing the stage, letting everyone in the band, and in the audience INTO the process, well, working with them was just as easy and cool and beautiful as that. Word!

This grand generous spirit will abide this weekend at the Big Top, I’m sure of it, and I believe everyone is going to have the most memorable and fantastic time at this rare multi-dimentional event!

I started with the program poster and created a psychedelic circus master; and then for my silkscreen poster, I enlarged on the fantastical circus tent over the circus master’s left shoulder. There is our utopian Big Top, our new community, high on a lofty mountain, a kind of Shangra-La of imaginary delights. I could have drawn the tent bigger. I could have focussed on that. I thought to do that. Believe me this will be one Big Tent event, in every meaning of the words. Instead, I put our Big Top tent high on an impossible hill, where the eagles dare, and where once you go inside, you may find your guru, wise man, best friend forever, your never-never, your inner child, your outer chill, your upper register, your underground, your overstanding, your best self.

________________

I made this classic punk rock design for my friends in the band Sex Crime who will be touring Europe this October and November. Funny story, last August, I was delivering the large scale silkscreens from my Italian church installation to my friend’s restaurant Blue Valentine in Paris. When I arrived, we celebrated my arrival by going to a tiki bar for drinks. I was in Paris for one night only. One night, and I ran into my old gang!

Cecilia, who was in the classic punk band Les Terribles, appeared at the bar right next to me to order a drink. A few years ago Cecilia, a French girl, married Ryan from The Epoxies, and moved to Portland. So when I saw Cecilia out of the blue, I said, “Hey, what are you doing in Paris?” She laughed, returned, “What are you doing here?” (It was my friend Ywan’s birthday and everyone was downstairs in the VIP room. Ywan owns Born Bad, the coolest record store in Paris, where I had one of my first big shows in Paris about 8 years ago, and there he was with a bunch of our friends!)

When I was up in Portland for my retrospective, I looked up Cecilia and Ryan, and we hung out all week. It was very nice getting back in touch! Well, Ryan and Cecilia asked me to make a tour poster for their great new band, Sex Crime.

When I was back in Paris at the end of August I asked my friends Alex, Silvio and Pierre of Editions Penibles to print the tour edition of Sex Crime. That saved Ryan and Cecilia a bundle in duties. You may remember Alex from Editions Penibles who helped me print my PRIMUS poster from a couple years back. Same crew. Alex from Editions Penibles was my apprentice in Italy when I made the print studio there for a year in 2007, so we go way back. Editions Penibles are mad good printers, and they are very tight with all the best graffiti writers in Paris, so have a look at some of their posters HERE and “like” their Facebook page HERE.

There will be a Tour Edition of the Sex Crime poster – not signed – and an Artist Edition of the Sex Crime poster – signed and numbered – which I am offering here.

Silvio Magaglio and Alexandre d’Huy of Les Editions Penibles visit me while I was painting the ceiling for Paris restaurant, Blue Valentine.

Last August Alex took me into the UN-official catacombs of Paris. I am not talking about the tourist catacombs. We entered this endless network by hopping a fence and scrambling through a hole in the broken masonry in an old abandoned metro tunnel. We went exploring, wandered through miles of secret passages up to our knees in fresh ground water (you are about 100 feet below the sewer system). We found all sorts of cool graf, and found inscriptions from before and during the French Revolution (You can tell the Revolutionary ones, for instance the one in the photo below says, “7R,” meaning the Seventh Year of the French Revolution). Alex took me below the Montparnasse Cemetery where we discovered heaps of 400 year old bones. It was the definition of spooky! What an adventure! Here’s some photos of my catacomb experience:

Sperry Creating Visual Identity of Paris Restaurant, Blue Valentine, Opens November 2013

Blue Valentine, at 13 rue de la Pierre-Levée, 75011 Paris, is a new restaurant themed on my art, and will open in the first half of November.

blue-valentine-door

I am very proud to be a central part of this project, which was dreamed up by my dear friend Léna Balacco, who owns two restaurants in Paris already, and is opening her third inspired by my art. I introduced Léna and my god-daughter Elvis Balacco to many of you who attended the Rock Art By The Bay event here in San Francisco last July.

Blue Valentine will serve superb French food, tasty cocktails, organic beers and wines; it will be an excellent place for my friends and fans to stop and eat or drink, whenever they should find themselves in Paris.

I’ve created the visual identity of the restaurant, logo, cards, coasters, window, bar and table design, and painted a mural design on the ceiling. The pieces from my very special show in Italy will permanently be on display at Blue Valentine – and available for acquisition – for drinkers and diners.

Restaurant manager, expert bartender and friendly conversationalist Thomas King will be there to greet you; Thomas is from Chicago, mixes excellent cocktails, and will make you feel right at home.

Here are some photos of my work on the ceiling painting for Blue Valentine in late August through early September, just a taste of the great restaurant being born:
