________________

Odd City Entertainment commissioned me to create a print for the Austin Film Society’s 20th Anniversary Screening and Cast Reunion of Richard Linklater’s iconic film, Dazed and Confused. My art print will be released at the Austin Film Society’s Dazed and Confused screening event on March 6, 2013 at The Marchesa Hall and Theatre in Austin, Texas. All net proceeds from the sale of my art print will benefit the Austin Film Society. Event attendees will receive priority when purchasing this print. In the unlikely case that there are additional prints which are reserved for the screening after the event, they will be sold through Odd City’s website.

About the artwork:

The H18 Project marks its debut with a special Chuck Sperry film poster for the 20th Anniversary Screening and Cast Reunion of Dazed and Confused, presented by the Austin Film Society.

To me, Dazed and Confused presents a pinball storyline structure and afforded me the opportunity to present the cast in equal weight to emphasize the ensemble nature of the film. They appear as bonus lights on the play table. I reproduced Mr. Linklater’s director notes to the actors on the pinball instruction card. The directions inspire the cast towards spontaneity, truthfulness, and in Linklater’s words “100% accuracy and thoroughness in detail” as I sincerely hope is also reflected in my poster  design.

More About the Dazed and Confused Film Poster by Chuck Sperry:

I was born in 1962 and was fourteen in 1976; I remember that year vividly. I was growing up in Ohio. If I’d grown up in Austin, Texas, I would have been Mitch in Dazed and Confused. In fact, Mitch is my referent within this well balanced ensemble cast in Richard Linklater’s outstanding paean to the era of my youth.

Like Mitch, I loved pinball, and the Fireball machine specifically, the popular arcade game upon which my Dazed and Confused poster is based. You can see it in the Emporium; Slater plays Fireball in the pinball scene. Pinball reflects the nuts and bolts affections of the analog spirit of ’76.

There’s a groovy, bicentennial pop quality to the mod design elements and use of gold and blue-silver metallic ink, and the use of nine colors to portray this icon to a bygone era immortalized in Mr. Linklater’s far out movie.

Mickey Hart Band “Worlds Within” Poster Wins Award

MICY-HART-WEB

My Mickey Hart “Worlds Within” Tour poster has won Poster of the Week on Expressobeans. And with that news I want to show you the finished poster. A huge thanks to all of my supporters, you rock!

This is some of the most insane – some might say, most difficult – printing I’ve ever done. There is a lot of color-to-color registration, and texture effects galore, happening on this one. I’m thrilled with the result!

I just delivered the prints, and ordered Mr. Hart’s people enough heavy Yazoo Mills tubes to ship their orders. Today the crew at Hangar 18 gave Mickey Hart’s shippers a very thorough tutorial on my shipping methods. I’m so proud of this one I am doing everything possible to get the to you in the best possible condition!

Tonight’s Soundgarden poster is the first of a pair of posters for the Fox Theater in downtown Oakland printed by me with the awesome assistance of Chris Shaw at Hangar 18. I always have a great time working with Chris; there’s a lot of history between us, and we have always co-operated and taken on collaborative creative projects so well. I was contacted by Soundgarden to find a friend artist and create a pair of Soundgarden Fox Theater posters – the exact words were “Sister Prints” – both to be printed at my art studio, Hangar 18.

My Soundgarden Sister riffs on Soundgarden’s King Animal album title. I wanted to bring a sense of humanity’s domination of nature. By representing power and privilege, my Sister holds a mink stole by a gold chain through the pelted mink’s nose, and with rock hands. I created an intricate pattern to weave throughout the design using the album cover motifs:
