Dirk Dirksen Pope of Punk Gets Street Named After Him

dirk

Now Dirk is a living part of North Beach, San Francisco, Punk Rock History and a California legend with his own street and plaque ensconced in pavement at 443 Broadway and Dirk Dirksen Place. So many of you to thank…Thank you so very much friends, Dirk’s family, punk rockers and the SF City officials for your contribution and support in making this a reality.

Special Thanks to Tom Ammiano and colleagues for helping us pass the legislation for the street renaming in Dirk’s honor and Joel Selvin for his punkish verse dedication that Dirk would have loved.

Postering on Haight Street, San Francisco

anubis window openerhaighashbury

The first thing about rock posters, that sometimes gets lost in the shuffle on the internet, is that the real purpose of a poster is street advertising. Yes, it’s cool to share these poster as art pieces on Expressobeans.com or on Gigposters.com or here on my blog; but their primary reason for being is to be seen on the street and get people to go to the show.

When The Firehouse was commissioned by Goldenvoice to make a silkscreen series of posters for the Warfield and Regency theaters in September of 2008, my first thought was, “Let’s get all of these posters ON THE STREET!”

There are a lot of ways to grab a person’s attention through design. I’m not going to get into that too deeply right now. I’ll save that for another blog. There’s a bright attention grabber like the last poster for Clutch at the Regency; that’s a poster with a sparkly metallic motorcycle to shoot a strobe flash into your eyes. The attention-grabbing effect of using bold legible yellow and red type giving you the info in a blast.

My Glasvegas poster has a different strategy to get you to look. I consider the visual environment of the street, and design a poster which is different than the dominant colors you’ll find there. And you can see, this one pops out like a breath of fresh air.

Anyway, enjoy these pictures taken by my lovely girlfriend Nancy.  Have a tour of my neighborhood, follow me while I take along some scotch tape and we put some posters up on Haight Street. I’ll take you to my favorite stores along the way…

Here’s my girlfriend Nancy with my newest creation for Glasvegas (in front of the Haight Ashbury Post Office)

Fight Homelessness Poster by Chuck Sperry

chucksperryabbepierre“3.5 Million Inadequately Housed in France: What if Rock was engaged on their side?”

POSTER WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE LATER IN AUGUST – A PORTION OF PROCEEDS TO GO TO ABBE PIERRE FOUNDATION.

Earlier this summer I was asked to donate a rock poster design for the Abbe Pierre Foundation in France on the subject of Homelessness. The idea was to raise awareness at rock shows that 3,500,000 people are homeless or inadequately housed in France. These posters will go out all over France at 5 international music festivals to inspire people to sign Abbe Pierre’s Anti-Homelessness manifesto.

Abbe Pierre, a Catholic priest, was a tireless Conscientious Objector in France, fought in the Resistance during World War II, and saved many Jews and Political Undesirables from Concentration Camps. After the War, Abbe Pierre organized The Emmaus Movement, an international organization aimed at helping the Poor, Homeless and Refugeed.

In the 1990’s Abbe Pierre called real estate developers “salopards” (assholes), and joined in the taking of unoccupied buildings in France for the poor, undocumented and homeless.

Abbe Pierre is one of the most popular figures in France; he fought for homeless rights since 1949.

Clutch Baroness Lionize Poster

cltchsmNumber 49 in the Firehouse Goldenvoice series, shows us a reckless, hellbound outlaw tearing up the everything in his way as he blazes down to Clutch, Baroness and Lionize at The Regency. The show ripped! Baroness was wicked cool playing their “Red Album” bathed in red stage-lights. Had to pick up John Baizley’s silkscreen print of the album cover art from “Red.” Clutch was massive, tight and better than ever. A great ol’ rock’n’roll show deserving of a great monster motorcycle poster.
Edition of 150
printed on 14 point cover
27″ x 23″

Signed / Numbered

Sold Out – Thank You!
