Burroughs

Hangar 18 Studio Gallery is also proud to introduce guest printmakers, John Hancock and Carlos Hernandez, who will be making a special printmaking demonstration on Friday, March 28, 2014 from noon to 5pm.

 “Burroughs Screen Print Mash-Up”

John Hancock & Carlos Hernandez live screen print demonstration

at Hangar 18 Studio Gallery

1428 34th Street, Oakland, CA

Event: Friday, March 28, 2014 • noon to 6 pm

John Hancock of The Amazing Hancock Brothers and Carlos Hernandez will showcase their “dirty” printmaking with their Burroughs Screen Print Mash-Up, presented by Speedball Art Products.  The process is collaborative, frenetic, fast and democratic.  A set number of images are chosen, put into screens and are printed in a seemingly random manner.  The prints created will celebrate the life of postmodernist author and artist William S. Burroughs, who was born 100 years ago this year. Considered to be one of the most politically trenchant, culturally influential, and innovative artists of the 20th century, Burroughs has affected a wide range of popular culture. He was a primary figure of the Beat Generation, which began in New York and eventually relocated to San Francisco, when the central members (minus Burroughs) ended up here together.

John Hancock and Carlos Hernandez are joining forces to celebrate the Southern Graphics Council International printmaking conference which will be convening at San Francisco’s Hyatt Regency, Embarcadero, with a multitude of additional participating organizations, from March 26 to March 30, 2014.

The Southern Graphics Council International (SGCI), the largest print organization in North America, is holding it’s annual conference in The Bay Area. SGCI annual conference is the biggest annual gathering focused on the field of printmaking. Artists from all 50 states, as well as international artists, attend the conference. The 42nd annual conference will be held in the San Francisco Bay Area, the first West Coast conference in the organization’s history. Bridges, this year’s conference theme, will investigate the intersections between traditional and emerging technologies, between art, communication and activism.

Speedball Art Products, who produce a complete line of block printing and screen printing supplies, as well as other fine art supplies, is sponsoring the Screen Print Mash-Up at Hangar 18.  Their screen printing products will be used exclusively during the Burroughs Screen Print Mash-Up.

The Burroughs Screen Print Mash-Up will be hosted by Chuck Sperry at Hangar 18, his silkscreen print studio located in Oakland. Sperry has honed his craft of designing and hand screen printing for over 15 years to become recognized throughout the world as one of the foremost rock poster artists and printmakers. Elevating the craft to fine art, he creates socio-political artwork beyond rock.

Infamous “low-tech” print masters, Texas-born The Amazing Hancock Brothers look to shock as much as inform. Their bold, unabashed style combines screen printing, woodcuts, and acrylic into mixed-use pieces that resemble part Circus Freak posters, part insane patterns, and all crazy, in-your-face attitude. Brothers Charles and John often throw all sense of propriety out the window, then rip down the curtains, screen clowns or skulls or grotesque portraits on them, and then throw that out the window, too. As members of Dirty Printmakers of America, they are able to use their ferocious, fearless talent to push the awareness and accessibility of printmaking to the huddled masses, democratizing art and technique.

A member of the infamous Outlaw Printmakers, Houston-based serigraphy artist Carlos Hernandez has had his work featured in the 2011 Communication Arts Typography annual, the 2011 & 2012 Communication Arts Illustration annual and was also recently published in the 2012 book Mexican Graphics by Korero Books-UK.  He has designed and printed gig posters for such artists as The Kills, Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, Santana, and more. Most recently, he was selected as the official poster artist to design the commemorative poster for the 2013 Austin City Limits Music Festival. Carlos is a founding partner of Burning Bones Press, a full-service printmaking studio located in the Houston Heights, and serves as an instructor of Screen Printing at Rice University, Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts.

WP_BOOK_COVER_WEB

“Poster Children: The Art of Widespread Panic”

Widespread Panic has spent 25 years earning a reputation for amazing live shows. The band’s commitment to the live experience is not limited to the stage, but to visual artists across the country.

For years, the band has been dedicated to commissioning artists to create limited edition posters for their shows and they have archived all of these posters in their vault.

Every Widespread Panic fan would love the chance to dig through the bands poster archive, and with this book, they get the chance. Over 400 posters spanning their entire career are included in this 320 page hardcover book, including notes from Dave Schools and John Bell and from the poster artists, including; EMEK, Marq Spusta, Chuck Sperry and Jeff Wood.

Dave Schools, “These posters were another way for our fans to relive the show and commemorate a good time. In a way, they were like the gatefold record cover of the by-gone vinyl era – a visual interpretation for fans to look at while listening to our music.”

_______________

Widespread Panic will release this poster at their show in Atlanta on December 31, 2013.

I will make a very limited release of Artist Proofs and variants of this poster on Sunday, January 5, 2014 at a random time.

_______________

Here’s the poster I’ve been hinting about on my website, on Instagram and through Facebook since December 11 (here).

I set aside the entire month to work on my poster for Widespread Panic New Years Eve. Starting in late November, I have been working diligently on my poster design for Widespread Panic’s New Years Eve show. Months ago, Widespread Panic asked for an asian themed poster. I answered that I am very influenced by Japanese art, and that I would love to create a Japanese styled poster for the band.

I own an original Hiroshige, I have it hung right above my drawing board. It is my talisman, a beacon to guide me to work harder, an acme to reach for. I have pored through literally hundreds of Japanese prints over the years, until I have gotten good at distinguishing the different artists, 17th, 18th and 19th Century prints from each other, and in the process learned quite a lot about Japanese prints. One general idea I respond to in the history of Japanese printmaking is: the prints were produced and sold to the broad general public. Editions were very limited, usually 200 prints were produced, the woodcut technique limited edition size; the blocks would become ink-soaked, water-logged and distorted if more than 200 prints were produced. This also matches my belief that my prints should be as limited as possible, popularity of the band or event permitting.

I love the handling of space in the classic Japanese woodcut, the use of tight composition, and the use of pattern to break the space and add interest. One would have, no doubt, noticed this approach in my design and printing by now. I love the dynamism of the line work in Japanese art. Again, my love of this line quality carries through most of my work.

I worked on the sketches and preliminary designs in late Novemeber, started to create all the pattern designs and ink drawings into poster form from Dec 1 through Dec 11. On December 11 I started dropping hints in public, posting a cherry blossom photo on Instagram and posting a cherry blossom video on my website and linking it to Facebook.

I felt it would be a nice surprise, to break from the themes that I have been working on lately. To make this poster a surprise.

My poster is inspired by the 17th Century concept of Ukiyo-e (literally: floating world) “living only for the moment, gazing at the moon, snow, cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, enjoying wine, women and song, and in general, drifting along with the currents of life…” according to the Buddhist priest Asai Ryoi, the famous Japanese author. I portray a geisha playing a shamisen. A visual pun has this traditional musical instrument plugged discreetly into an amplifier hidden behind a screen (the cord runs from the shamisen under the screen and is plugged into the amp). I felt that this affirmation of carpe diem (seizing the moment) would be an appropriate note to strike at New Years, and a good note to ring us into 2014.

Most of this poster was color to color registration, where all six colors meet without being hidden by the black lines. In fact the black line only delineates between differing patterns, but does not hide or mask where the colors meet each other. I aspire to make a pure kind of print, where the technique is shown, and the artifact of printing is apparent, not hidden by black ink placed over where the colors are meeting. It’s an expression in form of clarity.

I created four custom patterns for my poster (see below). Three run as themes throughout the design, and the fourth, the cherry blossom pattern has four sub-patterns that interlock throughout it’s design. One note about the cherry blossom pattern, is that there are about 75 individual cherry blossoms in each repetition (not counting buds), and my custom geometrical patterns behind the blossoms are interlocking, repeating with each reiteration of the blossoms. The cherry blossom pattern was in itself many days of designing.
