DEVO “Freedom of Choice” Poster

devo_chucksperry

Looking forward to tonight’s show! DEVO performed “Are We Not Men?” on Friday, and will perform “Freedom of Choice” tonight at The Regency Ballroom in San Francisco. You can check out the playlist in my poster – all the song titles from “Freedom of Choice are in there.

Just got back from the show. I love it when the floor at The Regency bounces like a trampoline. Crowd went mad for DEVO tonight. Great crowd, won’t suss anyone out – you know who you are – and we had fun! Good conversation, lovely crowd and a great show.

Butthole Surfers, Melvins, Regency Poster by Mike King

surfers

I asked Mike King to create the Butthole Surfers Poster for the Firehouse Goldenvoice Series at The Regency, in San Francisco. I had the pleasure to spend some time with Mike King in the UK a couple of years ago. We were in Brighton, UK at the Fringe Festival; we both conducted workshops with British artists teaching silkscreening. The artists who attended our workshops formed an artist collective called BRAG – The British Rock Artists Group – and started firing off posters at mind-blowing speed, as they formed from our workshops and were really inspired to start from Mike and my visit. It was pretty gratifying to see that our workshops had made such a tangible impact.

–

Anyway, I’ve always wanted to collab with Mike since. I exhibited posters with him earlier this year at Vanish Fine Art, during The Gigposter Book release party. We were hanging out at the show and I thought to ask him to create a poster for the Butthole Surfers. He said, “Why don’t I just send you black color separations and you choose the colors.” The rock poster documentary American Artifact was being released the same week, the premiere was the next day at The Red Vic Theater. Marty Hohn TRPS President, was asking to see my American Artifact silkscreen poster while I was talking to Mike. I busted it out. And Mike reacted, “Dude! Yep, I definitely want you to choose the colors!”

–

So with the colors I chose, I went for ultimate eye-fry with multiple color vibrations on the blue/red, green/red, and blue/magenta: all vibrating color combinations. And just to give it that Firehouse touch, the three-eyed kitty is heavy silver metallic with a magenta tint.

The Pogues at The Warfield and The Regency, San Francisco, October 13 and 14, 2009

poguessm

Here’s the first Firehouse Goldenvoice Series poster for both venues, The Warfield and The Regency, in San Francisco, number 70 in the series.

ANUFROG

Somehow I managed to draw and design and hand-letter this poster on the Monday after The TRPS Hall of Flowers Show. After having breakfast in The Haight-Ashbury with Urlo, Poia and Lu of Malleus, Jeff Wood, Johnny Thief and George Gamboa at The Pork Store. And after Jeff came over to the house to pack his posters to send home (Cool, Jeff stoked me a Stanley Mouse / Jeff Wood – Sheppard Fairey parody – colab print called “DOSE”). And after a gallery meeting with Phil Cushway at Artrock. And after dropping The Malleus kids off at Union Square; I got to work on this drawing of Anu – Irish Goddess of The Waters. The first real winter rain was just starting to blow into San Francisco, tearing through the trees in front of my apartment in the Panhandle. Thought the Pogues would dig this drawing, a reference to the primordial Celtic goddess of fertility.

POGUES

Urlo arrived and suggested I put “The Pogues” into the reflection right under Anu’s face. I handed him the drawing and a piece of paper and pencil and asked him if he would like to letter that. So he did. The result is a bit of a cool colab action – all relaxed – just a slice of life. Nice to have the Malleus folks staying at the house.

Mogwai and Dead Meadow at the Regency Poster

mogwgig

I designed the 39th gig poster in the Firehouse-Goldenvoice Series for the Mogwai concert on May 17, 2009 at The Regency Ballroom in San Francisco, California with special guests Dead Meadow.

I used a blue-tinted silver and layered process color over it and got great results. This one shimmers and shines.

Printing Zoltron’s Psychedelic Furs • Happy Mondays at the Regency

This photo sums it up nicely: “Wiley, the kid on the poster; Zoltron, the man behind the kid on the poster; Sperry, the man behind the man behind the kid on the poster.”

–

Printed Zoltron’s Psychedelic Furs / Happy Mondays poster on Wednesday. What a blast!

Zoltron went off on the typography. He told me it took a few days just to place all the characters, highlights and blends on the fonts.

This thing is a symphony of yellow, really an eye grabber.

We had really the best day of printing, and had a lot of cool visitors. George Gamboa, Dave Hunter and Dennis Loren made the scene – here’s the TMZ photo of the crew – George is behind the camera. Oh, yeah, while printing the doorbell rang and a mysterious crate from Italy arrived – the Malleus art got locked into the vault.

Well, the funny part is we got finished at 8:30 pm Wednesday – so Zoltron and George dropped me off at my crib – and I started working on Phoenix. That drawing session went on to dawn. Caught about an hour of fitful sleep (too much coffee), woke up at 7:00 am and put the poster together for films. The whole idea just kind of dropped whole-piece out of the brain and onto the paper, definitely energized by the fun day before. Mr. Z picked me up at about 10:30 and off to get films on the way to the studio. I’m telling myself, things just happen in the way they should.

Number 62 in the Firehouse Goldenvoice poster series is designed by Zoltron for The Psychedelic Furs and Happy Mondays concert with special guests Amusement Parks on Fire on September 17, 2009 at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco, CA. This silkscreen gig poster measures 20″ x 27″ comes signed and numbered by the artist from an edition of 200. Love my way? There is a special red and white colorway, with an edition of 10. Both for sale now at Zoltron.com
