Mondo Bizzarro, June 7, Documentation “The Flowers of Popular Victories” Tour

Continuing the documentation of “The Flower of Popular Victories” Tour, I’m sharing photos (below poem) by Patty Brady aka Patty Ramona. I was stoked to meet a lot of good people at my opening, see old friends, and share my new pieces with my public in Rome at Mondo Bizzarro Gallery.

I was delighted to meet poet Alessandra Bava, to whom I was introduced by Alan Kaufman, President of The Free University of San Francisco. Alessandra Bava works closely with San Francisco Poet Laureate Jack Hirschman, and she is a member of Rome’s Revolutionary Poets Brigade. She and I exchanged gifts; she gave me her great book of poems called, Guerrilla Blues, and I gave her a Patti Smith poster in return. Later Alessandra Bava sent me a beautiful poem written to my art piece “Thalia” (many heartfelt thanks!):

My Muse or, Chuck Sperry’s Thalia

My muse is so art nouveau, yet popular.
My muse is so Rauschenberg and Mucha.
My muse hangs on a roman wall
crowned with a halo of flowers of rage.

Her eyes are closed. Her arms spread
wide open. She stamps her feet to the
ground and shakes her fists to the world.
The most ardent ink melts in her veins.

She sings all kinds of injustice that I see
and write down in form of mute golden
prayers. She demands I wrap my
leaves of paper in liquid poppy fire.

ROME POSTER WEB

The Flowers of Popular Victories

World renown American screen-print artist Chuck Sperry from San Francisco will be showing his new original large-scale works of art at Mondo Bizzarro Gallery, Rome. Mr. Sperry’s art is energized by the political street art and concert posters he has prolifically created for over 25 years. His new pieces, exhibited in Rome for the first time, express the synergy of social concern and popular iconography, graffiti and detourned classical themes, political outrage and imagery drawn from the Century-long world tradition of poster-making. This is his first ever solo show.

Rome, Italia

On Friday, June 7, 2013, Mondo Bizzarro Gallery of Rome will debut a special month long solo exposition of Chuck Sperry’s art. Mr Sperry will be showing a dozen large-scale, screen-printed works of art. Mondo Bizzarro Gallery Memories – June 3, 2010

Mondo Bizzarro invited me to do the first show on the tour. Only hitch is that my posters decided not to show up. I arrived in Rome on June 1st, but it took three days for my posters to get to Rome from Chicago. I spent three days learning how to play banjo – not wanting to disappoint.

Meanwhile Ron Donovan worked the problem from Stateside – calling to India and back – until he could finally chew out the baggage department at O’Hare Airport. He told them in no uncertain terms that they were “F@$king our tour.” My poster portfolios arrived the next day with numerous “URGENT” stickers pasted all over them.

Cristiano Armati and Dario Morgante were excellent hosts. We went out on the town in the San Lorenzo district of Rome. Luisa, François and Alessandro were so cool and helpful! Mondo Bizzarro has invited Firehouse to make a return show on October 21, 2010. I can not wait!

My old friend David Vecchiato showed up and made a story for Repubblica’s monthly art and entertainment magazine called “XL.”

Seems my friend Tara Macpherson dropped by Mondo Bizzarro in Rome a few days later.
