Jerry Garcia “Orpheus” Art Print

Jerry Garcia (Summer), 2017
21 x 32
Edition of 500
9 colors on cream paper
Signed and Numbered

This poster was officially available through the Jerry Garcia Estate.

I will be making my artist copies available only through my art shows and live appearances through the end of 2017.

_______________

In the second print of my portrait series, “Jerry Garcia (Summer)”, I hope to capture the vitality, good humor, and optimism of the Grateful Dead’s lead guitarist and principal vocalist, the one who anchored the concert hall with his good nature, while a wild, free improvisation swirled through him and around him. I wove a psychedelic paisley pattern throughout the design rendered in nine colors, including bright hues, hand-blended metallics and translucent glazes. My aim is to portray the vital Jerry, an “Orpheus” who could charm savage nature with music, a “Dark Star” who journeyed from the Haight-Ashbury to the Pyramids of Egypt.

“Helikon, The Muses of Chuck Sperry” On Sale

Chuck Sperry’s new book “Helikon” gathers together his masterfully screen printed wood panel series of contemporary-classical muses: work inspired by the spirit of the modern rock poster, graffiti, and the utopian ethos of 1960’s psychedelia.

“Helikon” presents 36 sumptuously photographed Sperrys paired with the prose or poem — from Homer to Nick Cave — that inspired each. Over a  dozen photos by Shaun Roberts give the reader an intimate portrait of the artist at work.

“Helikon” is Sperry’s beautifully designed, hand-bound coda to 5 years of artwork devoted to the perennial theme of Orphic Dionysian mysteries.

Foreward by New York Times’ bestselling author, Charles Bock, Beautiful Children, Alice & Oliver (Random House), and Best of NYC Culture 2016, Village Voice.

“Sperry draws from a deep, classical tradition of storytelling to visualize the famed and obscure characters from mythology. He continues by personifying “Music,” “Justice,” and “Equity” — putting faces on the concepts that seem to inspire his work greatly. Vivid and striking, the works inside Helikon are beautiful on the surface, but combined with the text, both classical and modern, they give insight into the muses that drive Sperry to create.” – Liz Ohanesian, Hi-Fructose, The New Contemporary Art Magazine, vol. 43

San Francisco artist Chuck Sperry has earned his right in the rock ‘n roll hall of fame….. not for music but for his incredible talent of designing and silkscreen printing distinctive rock posters, he has a slew of famous names that he has worked with and his artwork has been exhibited at some leading art and music institutions. Chuck has honed his craft to perfection, with 20 years of experience behind him — Kylie Dexter, Beautiful Bizarre

In Helikon, the words transport us, allowing us to see Sperry’s work through fresh, yet ancient, eyes. Importantly, they drive from our minds thoughts of the transitory — that Tethys was first introduced to the world as a Dave Matthews poster; that Artemis and Naiad made their debuts before fans of the Black Keys; that Olympia, Daphne, Semele, and Thalia were Panic ladies before they were Sperry’s muses. — Ben Marks, Wink Books

Edwardian Ball 2017 Poster

Edwardian Ball 2017
15 x 35
Edition of 125
3 colors on cream paper
Signed and Numbered

Sold Out – Thank You!
_______________

It’s Edwardian Ball time again, and as always, it’s a great pleasure to work with Justin Katz, the Edwardian Ball impresario, and once again I had a lot of fun making this poster!

My Edwardian Ball posters always have an edge of social critique in them. They are done with a wink and a nod, in keeping with the enjoyment of attending such an elaborate period pageant.

Most of the attendees also realize that the Edwardian era was one of unabashed and ostentatious oligarchy, unrivaled economic imperialism and a presumed European superiority complex. It’s all of these things that makes the period so bizarre to us today. I’ve always endeavored to reveal this outrageous and bizarre sense of imperial entitlement in my Edwardian Ball posters, and keep them wild and fun.

This year my poster depicts Cupid & Psyche, the belle of the ball and her accomplice, looking for her next intended target.
