The Rock Poster Soci­ety (TRPS) is pleased to announce the rock poster art event of the sum­mer! TRPS presents Rock Art By the Bay on Sat­ur­day August 18, 2012 at the Can­nery near San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf. The show will run from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admis­sion: FREE

I’ll be attending TRPS Rock Art By The Bay at The Cannery. It’s going to be a busy weekend.

Tonight, Thursday, August 16, 2012 I’ll be making a rare showing of my art pieces on wood panel at Varnish Fine Art Gallery at 16 Jessie Street, San Francisco. Pieces sold at Varnish benefit Visual Aid, so it is definitely for a really great cause. Come tonight, it’ll make a great pre-TRPS social event, and you can have a look at “Alpha,” “Omega,” “Cosmos,” and “Mind Spring,” and bring one home for a good cause!

I’ve got some news to share regarding some exclusive releases for the Rock Art by the Bay.

I’ll be making some never released artist proofs and very limited variants available on a one per person basis only to participants of the exposition on Saturday, August 18, 2012. There are some surprises here:

I teamed up with Chris Shaw to make Pearl Jam’s Oslo poster. Both Chris and I have made Pearl Jam posters in the mid-1990’s. So Oslo’s Pearl Jam poster is a mix of New School and Old School Rock Poster Art.

Since the theme of the PJ tour posters is VS, we immediately thought of a Ying-Yang form as a good way to communicate that idea.

Then we thought of that crazy “Norway Spiral” that filled the night sky over Norway a couple years back (because we both love unexplained and mysterious phenomena like that, even if it was probably a Russian rocket spinning out of control).

We gave it a psychedelic edge by making a Ying-Yang out of the form of the Norway Spiral, and creating two flying eyeballs, representing the opposing forces of Fire and Water. We wanted this poster to have a touch of skater punk, Psychedelia, and to just be iconic and bad-ass.

The small, subtle, silver spirals in the background, not only mirrors the Ying-Yang of the central image, but is inspired by Rosemalling, which is a Norwegian folk-art of decorative painting. This form of decoration originated in the rural valleys of Norway during the Baroque and Rococo Period in the mid 18th Century. It was a folk response to the intricate designs the wealthy folks in Norway were importing. The forms are usually simple and based on “C” and “S” forms. That seemed appropriate since Chris Shaw and Chuck Sperry are both “CS” names.

I’ll be making a very limited release of this poster and two variant editions on Sunday, July 8, 2012, at 10 am PST.

When JC Hall asked me to do a poster for Patti Smith, I jumped at the commission. I made this portrait of her, using a gold metallic base of patternization and layered colors over. The gold peeks through the final deep brown line art, and blues and reds were tinted with a semi-transluscent yellow.

I felt it would be cool for you to have all the choices put in front of you, before you made a choice which prints might appeal to you. The documentation and special circumstances surrounding the Genova Workshop makes that one a very special variant of the following designs. But you decide.

Also, excuse me for being a few days later than announced releasing these, I’ve had jet-lag a little worse than expected (I’m posting this at 4:30 am haha)
