Dark Nouveau Events in October

darknouveausperry

MALLEUS, the artist collective of Urlo, Poia and Lu, the remarkable poster design team from Italy, will be returning to San Francisco this year under the tour banner DARK NOUVEAU.

–

The following events are a celebration of “DARK NOUVEAU,” a return to the roots of poster creation. DARK NOUVEAU evokes equally the fin de siécle style of Toulouse-Lautrec and 1960’s San Francisco Psychedelia – and operates here as a manifesto of reinvention and revision – aimed at connecting to the poster movement of the Decadent Period to the Belle Epoque and folding it into the Psychedelic Period to the present modern global silkscreen movement.

Jesus Lizard Poster

chucksperryjesuslizard333

Poster ideas come from different places. This time: it was the paper color.

I knew I was onto something – when I cut this red paper down to a usable size at Sequoia Printing across the street from Hangar 18 – and everyone in the whole printshop stopped what they were doing and came over and complimented me on this beautiful red paper.

chucksperryjesuslizard10

This design began as a four color process poster printing technique,

stripped down to two colors, with the red layer reversed and printed in gold,

so the red of the strong diagonal bars and lips is the paper color.

chucksperryjesuslizard20

The effect is that the black areas punch a hole in the picture plane, and the gold pops forward.

Here’s the newest addition to my Power to the Peaceful series; I’ve done a silkscreen poster for the PTTP Concert every year since 2004.

I’m making my 2007 and 2008 Power to the Peaceful posters available here.

I’ll have a booth at Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park tomorrow, Saturday, September 12, 2009 for the 11th Annual Power to the Peaceful concert.

There’s a solid line up this year with Michael Franti and Spearhead, Alanis Morissette, and Sly & Robbie.

In additon Cherine Anderson, Vieux Farka Toure, Namkha Rinpoche, Sellassie and Truth Universal will open the show.

I’m looking forward to chill in the Park at this awesome free event, hope to see all my friends there!

Printing Dave Hunter and Dennis Loren Posters

chucksperrydavehunter

Last week was a full schedule of printing Warfield posters for the Firehouse Goldenvoice Series.

Here’s Dave Hunter and I proudly showing off our unbelievably beautiful new poster for the Neville Brother and Dr. John.

I printed Dennis Loren’s Al Green poster (FHGV #59) last Tuesday…

Also I’ve been organizing the Malleus California Tour 2009. It’s going to be a really full schedule of great events and surprises.

I’ll be posting an announcement in the middle of next week so stay tuned! It’s going to be so fun hanging out with Urlo, Poia and Lu – and making some incredible art together… Can’t wait.

I’ll be returning to my own work next week with my new Power to the Peaceful 2009 poster. The show is coming up Saturday, September 12, 2009 and will feature Michael Franti and Spearhead, Sly and Robbie and Alanis Morissette. Here’s a look at the last two posters I’ve done for this series, posters for 2008 and 2007.
