Screen print virtuoso, Chuck Sperry, is returning to Paris in person from California for a massive new exposition (300+ poster titles will be available) at l’Oeil Ouvert Gallery! Paris art lovers discovered Sperry at l’Oeil Ouvert at the end of 2013 and were seduced by his works and his muses.
Inspired and constantly exploring motifs as various as classical mythology, Art Nouveau, early 20th Century and early 1970’s typography, exploring the stars of the Rock universe, and the psychedelic 1960s, Chuck Sperry is able to impose his style upon all these various sources and inspirations. Share an evening with Sperry who crosses the Atlantic to share his world with an audience now enchanted by his talent.
Extolling femininity and the delicacy of floral motifs, the artist plays with the layering of materials, in a sensual intricacy that the eye can never completely resolve.
Whether the subjects of Sperry’s prints are queens of the first word (Alpha and Omega), or revolutionary warriors (Gogol Bordello), or indecisive Persephones (Widepsread Panic), or icons of Rock (Patti Smith), Chuck Sperry’s depiction of women truthfully represent figures deeply independent and sensual.
We admire the correctness of his representation of womanhood, the mastery of his technique, the beauty of this silkscreen work where each piece is limited in edition, signed and numbered, and Sperry’s labor is carried out manually by the artist himself in his studio in Oakland.

The Gallery is pleased to launch Pop Époque, Sperry’s summer tour in France which will be presented during three weeks in Paris in two galleries. Pop Époque will start on Thursday, June 19 at 6 pm with a colorful, cheerful, musical opening in the presence of Chuck Sperry at the l’Oeil Ouvert Gallery!

Pop Époque is two exhibitions:
• Silkscreen on paper at l’Oeil Ouvert (74 rue François Miron Paris 4ème) from June 19 to July 13.
• Silkscreen on wood at Gallery Oberkampf (103 rue Saint Maur, Paris 11th) from June 21 to July 4.

Chuck Sperry will be making a special month long installation in San Francisco of his very newest, large-scale, screen printed wood panel works of art – as a preview for his American supporters – of the show he is making in Paris at Galerie Oberkampf. The setting for the show is Sperry’s original Firehouse studio located on Pacific Avenue between Polk Street and Van Ness in San Francisco. There will be food, beverages and music; rock posters to be acquired; and Sperry’s newest screen printed works on wood panel. This will definitely be a fun evening!

Pop Époque – The Serigraphs of Chuck Sperry – Made in California
Last summer at the end of Chuck Sperry’s “Flowers of Popular Victories” Tour in Italy, he stopped in Paris to meet Magali Bru, owner of l’Oeil Ouvert Gallery. Sperry and Bru hatched a plan for a show in June 2014, with a small introductory show to happen at l’Oeil Ouvert in Paris, running from October to November of 2013. Well, the introductory show was such a smashing success that all the posters Chuck left to Magali were soon sold, more posters were sent to Paris, and Sperry’s “introduction” was extended to January 1, 2014. In February, the French Government, quite unexpectedly, included about a dozen Sperry posters in large well-atteneded overview of world-class graphic art at Les Docks in Paris. There was another wave of inquiries at l’Oeil Ouvert for Sperry’s posters and more press and television bringing attention to his art in France.

Chuck Sperry’s show called “Pop Époque” at l’Oeil Ouvert will open on June 19 and run until July 13, 2014. This will be a large showing of Chuck Sperry posters from his archive, which were originally released from the middle of 2013 to the beginning of June 2014, with some older posters included. Many of Sperry’s newest limited edition silkscreened concert posters will be available, rare and hard-to-acquire posters will be made available through l’Oeil Ouvert for the occasion!

Mr. Sperry’s art is energized by the political street art and concert posters he has prolifically created for over 25 years. His new pieces express the synergy of social concern and popular iconography, graffiti and detourned classical themes, political outrage and imagery drawn from the Century-long world tradition of poster-making.

Chuck Sperry lives in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, where he’s made his particular style of rock poster designs for over 20 years. He operates Hangar 18, a silkscreen print studio, located in Oakland. Learn More…
