A Few Words About Printing and Art

As someone who has actually been “in the trenches” printing all of my own posters, I have a right to a few words here on the subject.

To this day, 16 years and still going strong, I design and print all of my own posters and prints.

I don’t like it when artists who don’t print their own work act like they do. That’s elitist, untruthful and wrong. I think it’s part of the class system that we have grown to culturally accept having to do with working with your hands. As if manual dexterity is of a lower order of importance in the making of art, than to make something with your mind and to direct the labor to produce it. I feel this relationship of the artist as boss who directs labor to produce art, further emphasizes the elitism of a class stratified society.

In fact, working with your hands while using your mind is the very essence of artistic activity. This activity unifies the physical and cerebral into one activity. When I make my own art – when I actually print it – it is the fullest expression of my command of my mental artistic aims and my physical material conditions. It is pretentious to lead people to believe you produce your own prints, when you pay someone else to produce them.

If it is so glorious to produce the print, as many claim to do, when they do not, then why not get into the print studio and do the actual work. By working with the actual printing you will learn something about color, composition, design, screen printing itself (which is a physical activity), paper, ink, texture, luminosity, and the relationship between color and form. It will make you a better artist. If you do not print your own editions, don’t pretend like you do; It’s untruthful, and therefore can not be art. Truth is Beauty and Beauty is Truth. There I said it.

Pnina Sissman, book designer for Bar-Ilan University Press, Tel-Aviv, Israel asked for permission to use my Tower of Babel Paradiso print design for the cover of “From Language to Philosophy, Noam Chomsky in a New Light.” Great to see my work going far and wide, and I’m a big fan of Noam Chomsky, so that’s very cool. The art print of this design is available through Station 4 and Varnish Fine Art. Here’s the art print image, details with a link to Station 4 and Varnish.

Grinderman at The Warfield, November 29, 2010

Grinderman rocked it tonight! Nick Cave was so good. The band has an undefinable sound. The only word to use to describe it is: excellent. I was led into the dressing room to show the poster to Nick Cave, and his reaction was, “Wow! That’s beautiful.” Told Cave the image was based on “Heathen Child” and showed him her Eye of Horus make-up, and he cracked a smile and said, “Right on.” Great night!

I printed this with Eye-Fry deluxe, hitting the red two times to make it extra rich. The background metallic is a beautiful blend from blue-silver to green-silver.

NEW YORK – Graphic Radicals is a 30th anniversary retrospective of World War 3 Illustrated, an independently published political comic magazine founded in 1980 by artists Seth Tobocman and Peter Kuper. Comprised of original comics, drawings and paintings, posters, commissioned murals, documentary film, animation and a complete set of issues, Graphic Radicals will be the largest World War 3 exhibition to date and will highlight the history that World War 3 has scrutinized, documented, and participated in for three decades.

World War 3 Illustrated was first established in response to the Iran hostage crisis and impending election of Ronald Reagan and since then has confronted social and political issues ignored by the mainstream press. The magazine is an annual publication produced by a collective of artists with each issue addressing a particular theme. WW3 has covered topics as diverse as the Tompkins Square riot, homelessness, first-person accounts of 9/11, the prison industrial complex, a teachers’ strike in Mexico, Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts and, in the upcoming issue, the food chain.

Critic Lucy Lippard wrote of World War 3 Illustrated that its “ecological and social prophecies are coming to pass, and the apocalyptic vision that gives WW3 its desperate force and unique identity is the present.”
