I made this Moonalice poster for their gig at Don Quixote’s in Felton, California for Friday the 13th, 2010. I portray Hermes the inventor of the lyre. He is also the patron of boundaries and of the travelers who cross them, of shepherds and cowherds, of the cunning of thieves and liars, of orators and wit, of literature and poets, of athletics and sports, of weights and measures, of invention, and of commerce in general.

When I heard that Moonalice was playing at The Green Spot in Coos Bay, Oregon on Saturday, August 22, 2009, I thought, let’s make a red, pink, orange and magenta poster. I guess that’s just how my contrary mind works. The warm colors also contrast the euphonious green spot which I also couldn’t resist. The Moonalice Series also celebrates it’s 200th poster.

Moonalice legend says that all work and no play makes Obama a dull boy, so on a wise wombat’s advice the President of the Free World found himself vacationing in another bright green spot on this big blue marble, Martha’s Vinyard, this very day, chipping golf balls and waiting for Tiger. The POTUS may have a long wait for Tiger – Mr. Woods has plans. Or as one might tweet: “Woke up, had breakfast, went back to sleep. Life’s good LOL, IMHO, OMG.”

There’s a spirit in the air that inspired me to take a 1930′s era WPA Project poster for the Milk Industry and détourné* it’s message to get people to the Moonalice show in Sebastopol, California at The Hop Monk Tavern on August 14, 2009.

Moonalice legend says that drinking Howling Monkey or Hop Monk’s fine beer while listening to Moonalice in the good clean air of Northern California leads to Good Teeth, Vitality, Endurance & Strong Bones!

In addition to these words of wisdom from Moonalice legend, let’s read what the wikipedia says:

“In détournement, an artist reuses elements of well-known media to create a new work with a different message, often one opposed to the original. The term “détournement”, borrowed from the French, originated with the Situationist International; a similar term more familiar to English speakers would be “turnabout” or “derailment”. Détournement is similar to satirical parody, but employs more direct reuse or faithful mimicry of the original works rather than constructing a new work which merely alludes strongly to the original.”
