________________

I came across these words below while researching my poster design for 311 and their brand new album “Voyager”, and it inspired my poster design.

“We cast this message into the cosmos. It is likely to survive a billion years into our future, when our civilization is profoundly altered and the surface of the Earth may be vastly changed. Of the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy, some — perhaps many — may have inhabited planets and spacefaring civilizations. If one such civilization intercepts Voyager and can understand these recorded contents, here is our message:

This is a present from a small distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts, and our feelings. We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours. We hope someday, having solved the problems we face, to join a community of galactic civilizations. This record represents our hope and our determination, and our good will in a vast and awesome universe”

Gary Clark Jr. Hawaii Poster Wins Award

My Gary Clark Jr. Hawaii Poster has been voted Poster of the Week by Expressobeans members. Thanks to all my supporters, I very much appreciate it! That’s three this first half of the year! After taking my art to many shows around Europe, meeting with old friends and many new supporters, it’s very good to be home in San Francisco and making rock posters again! Thanks to Expressobeans.com. for continuing to support the poster arts with a passion for the form.

The inspiration for my poster is Hespera – associated with the golden light of the setting sun and the evening star – one of the Hesperides, the nymphs of the western-most islands and guardians of the golden apples.

My newest print for Gary Clark Jr. on my press and coming together through my hands. Yes, this machine fights alienation. Producing my art through every step of the process connects me to myself, to this world of things, and to you, my friend. I’d never choose another way. Normally I don’t preach – because I am confident my art expresses its concepts effectively – but I am grateful and inspired to be back in my studio in creative practice! – Chuck Sperry

KQED Arts: Nonprofit Developer To Save Community Of Tenants & Murals In Redstone Building By Barry McGee, Chuck Sperry, Ruby Neri, Carolyn Castaño

KQED Arts • June 26, 2019 • by Sam Lefebvre

1934 General Strike Meeting at the Redstone Building (1997) by Chuck Sperry

[Excerpt from KQED Arts, full article below]

The San Francisco Labor Temple opened in 1914, and for decades played a key role in the city’s labor movement. It was the headquarters for unions including Bookbinders’ Local 125, the first all-women union, and in 1934 was the nexus of a historic general strike. The building sold in 1968, gradually acquiring its current mix of arts, social services and cultural advocacy tenants.

In the 1990s, the Lab and the Clarion Alley Mural Project commissioned artists including Barry McGee, Chuck Sperry and Carolyn Castaño to paint murals commemorating the building’s legacy of labor organizing and community service. One of the city’s only publicly viewable artworks by the late Mission School artist Margaret Kilgallen is the Lab’s hand-painted sign.

Dena Beard, executive director of the Lab, described the murals as a prescient collection of the Mission School, a movement associated with unconventional materials, everyday forms and social commentary. “Every piece is really indicative of the artists’ styles at the time,” Beard said. “It was major recognition for what we now consider a hugely important movement.”
