Course Description:

The Free University Art School is very fortunate, and proud to present the very prolific street artist Blek le Rat on his journey around the world. He stops here with us for an extensive two hour presentation, sharing his masterful stencil art with the people of The Free University of San Francisco.  Blek will tell his story, share his insurgent spirit, show his work and may even create some stencil art live in person.

Come early / limited room!

Bio:

Blek le Rat was born in Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris in 1951. He is considered by most in the graffiti world to be the godfather of stencil graffiti art. He studied painting and architecture. He began his artwork in Paris in 1981. Since then he has had a great influence on today’s graffiti and “guerrilla art” movements, his main motivation being social consciousness and the desire to bring art to the people.

Eric Drooker at Fivepoints Arthouse, Free University Art School Event

The Free University of San Francisco aims to make the highest level of education available, completely free, to any individual who wants it, regardless of color, creed, age, gender, nationality, religion or immigration status—a university free of money, taught for free. The only requirement for membership is a desire to teach and/or a desire to learn.

Eric Drooker, Free University Art School Event

Friday, April 15, 2011 – 7:30PM to 9PM

Fivepoints Arthouse

72 Tehama Street (one block south of Howard Street / off 2nd Street)

San Francisco, CA

Bio:
ERIC DROOKER is a painter and graphic novelist, born and raised on Manhattan Island. He’s the award-winning author of “Flood! A Novel in Pictures,” and “Blood Song.” He designed the animation for the recent film, “Howl,” a movie based on the epic poem by Allen Ginsberg, who collaborated with Drooker on the book “Illuminated Poems.” His paintings appear on covers of “The New Yorker,” and hang in numerous collections.

Slide Lecture Description:
Visual artist Eric Drooker will project hundreds of images and explore his early years as a street artist in New York City. Although he continues to create radical street posters, he’ll demonstrate how his images function in various popular mediums. He’ll trace the evolution of his graphic novels into animation–as in the recent hit film “Howl”–and discuss his experiences creating public art, covers for “The New Yorker,” and his slow infiltration of the mainstream.

Lecture will be accompanied by the artist on a variety of musical instruments.

Eric Drooker was contacted by the IWW in Wisconsin last week.
They asked him to design the poster for a general strike, which now appears immanent.
As “industrial workers of the world” they also asked him to design versions in Spanish and Arabic, for international solidarity.
Please forward (& print) attached images widely, as you see fit, to union locals, websites, blogs, facebook, solidarity organizations, etc.
You may download hi-res versions here:

Spermbirds at Headhunters, SxSW, Austin Texas

When the German punk band, Spermbirds, asked me to do a poster for their upcoming SxSW showcase, I said, “Hells yeah!” I’d hung out with these cats in Berlin and had into all sorts of fun. The poster design is based on a German cigarette tax stamp from back in the day before the Euro came in. I’d been saving this thing for twelve years – looking at it and thinking, “Now, that’s a poster design waiting to happen.”

Edition of 125

Free University Art School – First Demonstration / Documentation

The Free University of San Francisco aims to make the highest level of education available, completely free, to any individual who wants it, regardless of color, creed, age, gender, nationality, religion or immigration status—a university free of money, taught for free. The only requirement for membership is a desire to teach and/or a desire to learn.

We believe that the purpose of education is not to turn the student into a better consumer and profit-earner but to help him or her to discover the wealth of human culture upon whose shoulders she or he stands. What we share at the Free University of San Francisco is a passionate determination to see the restoration of humanity—warm, literate, democratic—to vibrant human life. And in order to achieve this aim we have taken hold of the very hub of our culture, which is education, in order to create a brand new kind of institution, one whose existence makes no sense in the current social order, one that stands in direct defiance of the privatized profit-oriented social engineering centers that pass for universities today.

We are the Free University of San Francisco and we are rebels of knowledge.
