_______________

I’ve been looking forward to this weekend for a very long time, ever since I scheduled a Widespread Panic poster to appear between two Black Sabbath shows. Panic is very near and dear to my heart! I’ve been calling this “Sabbath Sandwich” with the meat in the middle. I worked very hard to make this poster shine!

My inspiration was given by the band, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”, and I ran with it without referring to the movie or book, but just using the idea as a theme. I created an image that suggests Eve in the Garden of Eden, but also suggests Eurydice who once bitten by the snake is taken away to Hades where Orpheus the Prophet-Musician must play his most beautiful music before the King and Queen of the Underworld to save his one true love. It’s a story about the power of love, the length of love and the strength of music to heal. I’ve been creating floral patterns for many of my prints over the last few years; I wanted to create a floral pattern for the background, but this time, a harmonious non-repeating one, which has the rhythm of nature. It’s always okay if you just want to enjoy it for your own reasons, but that’s my inspiration.

_______________
I think you have heard this from every artist tapped to make a Black Sabbath poster for this, their last tour. It’s an indescribable honor, a high point, especially for a veteran of the Rock Poster medium, like me; I’ve made posters (and by made – I mean printed every last one – haha!) for over twenty years, and this poster stands out as one of the greatest honors, truly a dream come true! I have rocked out to “War Pigs” for as long as I can remember. Now I’ve gotten to put my artistic stamp on this song, for a huge show for Black Sabbath at Madison Square Garden in New York City – and it’s a kind of surreal but highly satisfying experience.

Scarlett Johansson is “The Starlet” in “Hail, Caesar!” Art Print

“The Starlet”, Hail Caesar! movie premier poster
16.75 x 35
Artist Edition of 75
10 colors on cream paper

______________

I am incredibly honored to have been asked to make a poster for the Coen Brothers newest film, “Hail, Caesar!” to celebrate the movie’s premier.

“The Starlet” is my movie poster portrait of Scarlett Johansson, in her role as the brassy, troubled movie star of 1950’s swimsuit extravaganzas.

I wanted to cast my poster in a Film Noir style. I limited the palette, but increased the number of colors printed to ten colors, to give my poster a classic movie poster appearance. Two metallics, two spot colors, and a sepia toned shadow glaze combine with five additional colors to create an atmospheric 1950’s Los Angeles backlot studio office.

______________

This poster was officially released this last Monday (2/116) through Hero Complex Gallery, Los Angeles in co-operation with Universal, The Coen Brothers, and Working Title. You can read more on AV Club.

I will be making a very limited online release of my Artist Edition of this poster on Sunday, February 7, 2016 at a random time.
