The Firehouse Goldenvoice Series of posters has reached number 100, with the promise of the next 100 posters and a bright future for the series ahead.

Many Thanks to David Lefkowitz for commissioning 100 posters for Goldenvoice, and making all this possible.

That’s why this pivotal poster includes numbers 100 and 101 in one piece designed and printed by Chuck Sperry and Dave Hunter.

The band on the poster is the Dark Star Orchestra, who recreate the music of the Grateful Dead. Dark Star Orchestra gathers the tribe – really most of the same people, their children and friends -  who inspired The Original psychedelic rock promoter Chet Helms to commission the very first modern rock posters by Stanley Mouse, Wes Wilson, Rick Griffin, Alton Kelley and Victor Moscoso.

The venue is the Regency which occupies the very same room -  then called the Avalon Ballroom -  where Mr. Helms promoted the first Grateful Dead shows for his production company, the Family Dog. It seemed appropriate to end the first 100 and begin the next 100 right where it all started.

In fact, when Dave and I delivered the posters on Friday to The Regency, there was Stanley Mouse with easel and canvas – painting a Skull and Roses – right in the lobby.

The inspiration for the poster is the Grateful Dead song “Sugar Magnolia” with it’s follow through to “Sunshine Daydream.”

With much respect and appreciation to the roots of the modern rock art poster, and with “next-level” design and printing techniques, Dave Hunter and Chuck Sperry present 100-101 – a psychedelic thank you, a friendly rock and roll IOU to the masters of the past, and a cheerful iridescent / metallic good morning to the future.

Dolores O’Riordan can take the listener to a place no male vocalist can. That’s why I portray her here as a Siren.

You could just tell the band was way into it. Packed house and everyone was singing all the way to the back wall.

Show was just amazing!

Looking forward to tonight’s show! DEVO performed “Are We Not Men?” on Friday, and will perform “Freedom of Choice” tonight at The Regency Ballroom in San Francisco. You can check out the playlist in my poster – all the song titles from “Freedom of Choice are in there.

-

Just got back from the show. I love it when the floor at The Regency bounces like a trampoline. Crowd went mad for DEVO tonight. Great crowd, won’t suss anyone out – you know who you are – and we had fun! Good conversation, lovely crowd and a great show.

surfers

I asked Mike King to create the Butthole Surfers Poster for the Firehouse Goldenvoice Series at The Regency, in San Francisco. I had the pleasure to spend some time with Mike King in the UK a couple of years ago. We were in Brighton, UK at the Fringe Festival; we both conducted workshops with British artists teaching silkscreening. The artists who attended our workshops formed an artist collective called BRAG – The British Rock Artists Group – and started firing off posters at mind-blowing speed, as they formed from our workshops and were really inspired to start from Mike and my visit. It was pretty gratifying to see that our workshops had made such a tangible impact.

-

Anyway, I’ve always wanted to collab with Mike since. I exhibited posters with him earlier this year at Vanish Fine Art, during The Gigposter Book release party. We were hanging out at the show and I thought to ask him to create a poster for the Butthole Surfers. He said, “Why don’t I just send you black color separations and you choose the colors.” The rock poster documentary American Artifact was being released the same week, the premiere was the next day at The Red Vic Theater. Marty Hohn TRPS President, was asking to see my American Artifact silkscreen poster while I was talking to Mike. I busted it out. And Mike reacted, “Dude! Yep, I definitely want you to choose the colors!”

-

So with the colors I chose, I went for ultimate eye-fry with multiple color vibrations on the blue/red, green/red, and blue/magenta: all vibrating color combinations. And just to give it that Firehouse touch, the three-eyed kitty is heavy silver metallic with a magenta tint.
