Ray Davies brought the choir to The Warfield tonight – he also brought his anarchic sense of humor and brought down the house.

Saying this was a good show is an understatement.

-

I noticed that Ray Davies used a William Blake illustration for the cover of his latest album featuring choral arrangements of his favorite songs, so I’m paying homage with this poster, using William Blake art from his worked entitled, “Ancient of Days.” I used a heavy metallic silver and tinted it with translucent layers of color on black paper. This poster shines.

William Blake (28 November 1757 – 12 August 1827) was an English Poet. painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of both the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age.

I asked Mike King to create the Butthole Surfers Poster for the Firehouse Goldenvoice Series at The Regency, in San Francisco. I had the pleasure to spend some time with Mike King in the UK a couple of years ago. We were in Brighton, UK at the Fringe Festival; we both conducted workshops with British artists teaching silkscreening. The artists who attended our workshops formed an artist collective called BRAG – The British Rock Artists Group – and started firing off posters at mind-blowing speed, as they formed from our workshops and were really inspired to start from Mike and my visit. It was pretty gratifying to see that our workshops had made such a tangible impact.

-

Anyway, I’ve always wanted to collab with Mike since. I exhibited posters with him earlier this year at Vanish Fine Art, during The Gigposter Book release party. We were hanging out at the show and I thought to ask him to create a poster for the Butthole Surfers. He said, “Why don’t I just send you black color separations and you choose the colors.” The rock poster documentary American Artifact was being released the same week, the premiere was the next day at The Red Vic Theater. Marty Hohn TRPS President, was asking to see my American Artifact silkscreen poster while I was talking to Mike. I busted it out. And Mike reacted, “Dude! Yep, I definitely want you to choose the colors!”

-

So with the colors I chose, I went for ultimate eye-fry with multiple color vibrations on the blue/red, green/red, and blue/magenta: all vibrating color combinations. And just to give it that Firehouse touch, the three-eyed kitty is heavy silver metallic with a magenta tint.

Here’s Firehouse Goldenvoice Series poster number 71 for Moby at The Warfield on October 15, 2009 in San Francisco.

I went for a Film Noir treatment, a mysterious meeting at a bar.

-

You can see the heavy silver metallic and bronze tinting with orange accents below – two shots in different light to show the atmosphere of this poster.

How’s this for a Rock Moment? I leave George Gamboa and Doug Dashiell to go to the Warfield lobby and get a beer as Nashville Pussy wraps their set. In the lobby I run into Goldenvoice head honcho David Lefkowitz who says, “Chuck! Great poster for tonight!” and Eric McFadden appears and I say, “Hey Dude! You rocked the shit out of ‘Low Spark of High Heeled Boys’ with Gov’t Mule last week! Ron and I have to have a recording of that. It’s one of the Firehouse’s favorite songs. Amazing!” Right then Nashville Pussy’s guitarist, Ruyter Suys comes busting through the door on the shoulders of the biggest friggin bouncer at the Warfield, says. “Hey! Eric!” and deposits herself right into Eric McFadden’s arms right in the middle of this convo. Amazing show!

Slice of life and great night! Idea for the poster is something like this: Knights Templar, Knight of Rock’n'roll, or just plain Metal. You decide.

Here’s the first poster I did for the Firehouse-Goldenvoice Poster Series.

Nick Cave played at The Warfield in San Francisco, California on September 19 and 20, 2008 with Red Sparowes.

I designed a 4 color silkscreen gig poster for this event using a very fine etching collage I created. This poster measures 26″ x 23″ and comes from an edition of 250, signed and numbered. This poster is #3 in the Firehouse Goldenvoice poster series.
