The following events are a celebration of “DARK NOUVEAU,” a return to the roots of poster creation. DARK NOUVEAU evokes equally the fin de siècle style of Toulouse-Lautrec and 1960’s San Francisco Psychedelia – and operates here as a manifesto of reinvention and revision – aimed at connecting to the poster movement of the Decadent Period to the Belle Epoque and folding it into the Psychedelic Period to the present modern global silkscreen movement.

I confess, I’ve always loved The English Beat. Judging from the packed house on Monday, August 3, 2009, I’m not alone. My poster goes retro, mixing my metaphors with Vienna Secession Style, the Glasgow Arts and Crafts Movement and early-1960’s retro cool: going 2 Tone in three color. A solid gold poster for Firehouse Goldenvoice number 54.
Ran into Rudy (Can’t Fail) Fernandez, at the show who was there to meet with front man Dave Wakeling. Rudy met the Clash in the late 70’s, driving Joe, Mick and co. around California during their first tour, and since then, there isn’t an English musician Rudy doesn’t know. Rudy introduced me and Dave Wakeling, so having a conversation with the famed singer was a treat. Subject of conversation: American Artifact, the rock poster documentary by Merle Becker that Dave and I appear in. His comment, “Seems this poster thing is very San Francisco.”
“It’s my bag, man,”
Don’t save it for later, because this one just can’t stop.
